Chef Shaun Kahele

Meet Shaun Kahele, a native Hawaiian chef and visionary restaurateur who embarked on a culinary journey that spans over two decades. Sixteen years ago, Shaun, accompanied by his wife and three kids, made the bold move from the tropical paradise of Hawaii to the Frontier State of Alaska. Today, the Kahele family has not only thrived but has also expanded to a family of eight, all actively involved in operating several family businesses.

Shaun's culinary odyssey began in high school in Hawaii, as a means to secure a free meal. Little did he know, this seemingly simple act would kindle a fiery passion that shaped his future. The spark was reignited by a fellow classmate and chef, setting the stage for a remarkable culinary career.

For the majority of his culinary journey, Shaun has been entirely self-taught, drawing inspiration from his experiences cooking with family. The invaluable knowledge passed down from his wife's grandfather and an uncle, who owned and operated a poke business in Hawaii, became the cornerstone for Shaun's culinary ventures.

Currently, at the helm of three successful enterprises, Lei's Poke Stop Anchorage, Lei's Poke Stop Wasilla, and the Da Pokeman Express Food Truck, Shaun has seamlessly woven the fabric of family into his professional life. Each business is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Shaun, his wife Tasha, and their devoted children – Leihoku, Hilina'i, Na'ea, Keala, Haweo, and Kipuehu. The Kahele family's dedication and contributions were recognized in 2023 when they were honored with the Pacific Island Community Volunteer Service Business Appreciation Award, underscoring their unwavering commitment to community service.

Determined to achieve culinary mastery, Shaun is presently completing his culinary education at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) with an anticipated graduation in 2024. This educational endeavor serves as a clear testament to his dedication to honing his skills and introducing a captivating blend of tropical Pacific Island flavors with an Asian infusion to elevate the Alaskan dining experience.
